In workplaces that have made efforts to dismantle barriers for BI&PoC employees, a harsh reality persists: those disproportionately impacted by write-ups or termination are often Brown and Black employees. Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) the first step in most terminations, can lay bare our biases, harming the very people they aim to help. The path from write-ups to termination seems like an inevitable conclusion due to frequent reliance on this approach for poor performance. However, there is an alternative that allows organizations to shift their focus from “What is going wrong” to “How can we be mutually successful” while still centering accountability.
